Design Cross-sectional study.

Setting Sleep laboratory. Subjects Fifty-five consecutive adult FSHD patients, 26 women and 29 men, age 49.6 +/- 15.1 years (range 1876). Interventions Questionnaires and polysomnography. Outcome Measures Patients were asked to indicate if in the 3 months before the sleep study they presented persisting or recurring musculoskeletal pain. Sotrastaurin manufacturer Patients who reported pain were asked to fill in the Italian version of the Brief Pain Inventory and the McGill Pain questionnaire, and a 101-point visual analog scale (VAS) for pain intensity. Polysomnographic recordings were performed. EEG was analyzed by means of Fast Fourier Transform. Four power spectra bands ( 04Hz, 48Hz, 814Hz, 1432Hz) were computed. Sleep macrostructure parameters and alpha/delta EEG power ratio during non rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep were compared between patients with and without pain. Results Forty-two patients in our sample reported chronic pain. VAS mean score was 55.2 +/- 23.8 (range 10100), pain rating index score

was 13.8 +/- 10.2, and present pain intensity was 2.5 +/- 0.8. The statistical analysis documented an increased occurrence of the alpha and beta rhythms during NREM sleep in FSHD patients with pain. Significant correlations were observed between the alpha/delta power ratio during NREM sleep and pain measures. Conclusions Chronic musculoskeletal pain is frequent in FSHD patients, and it represents a major mechanism of high throughput screening sleep disruption.”
“The growth and structure of Pt nanocrystals (NCs) formed by ion implantation in a-SiO(2) has been investigated as a function of the annealing conditions. Transmission electron microscopy and small-angle x-ray scattering measurements demonstrate that the annealing ambient has a significant influence on NC size. Samples annealed in either Ar, O(2),

or forming gas (95% N(2): 5% H(2)) at temperatures ranging from 500 degrees C-1300 degrees C form spherical NCs with mean diameters ranging from 1-14 nm. For a given temperature, annealing in Ar yields the DNA Damage inhibitor smallest NCs. O(2) and forming gas ambients produce NCs of comparable size though the latter induces H chemisorption at 1100 degrees C and above, as verified with x-ray absorption spectroscopy. This H intake is accompanied by a bond-length expansion and increased structural disorder in NCs of diameter >3 nm.”
“Objective. To determine factors affecting the success of bilateral same-session ureteroscopy (BSU) in the treatment of ureteral calculi. Material and methods. From January 2003 to December 2008, BSU was carried out in 89 patients (178 renal units). A successful outcome was considered when both ureters were free of stones without intraoperative complications. Stone-free rate was evaluated with a kidney–ureter–bladder plain X-ray or non-contrast computed tomography.
